What it looks like on the line
- ChocolateWrap and store cool. Bars are wrapped to keep out moisture and strong smells, because chocolate absorbs both. Warehouses hold them cool and dry in the dark until they ship.
- Black teaBlend and pack. Many black teas are blends of different estates. They are weighed into bags, tins or sacks for shipping.
- Bath towelInspect and pack. An inspector at each table checks both sides and a senior inspector passes it for labeling. Rejected pieces are kept apart, and holes and broken ends are among the common faults.
- ButterPrint and wrap. Butter is pressed into blocks, cut into sticks or tubs, and wrapped in foil or parchment.
- Ball bearingGrease and seal. The bearing is coated with a rust preservative or packed with grease, then fitted with shields or seals and boxed.
- NewspaperCount and bundle. Finished copies are counted into stacks, strapped and sent by conveyor to loading docks. Zoned editions of the same paper can carry different ads and local pages for each delivery area.
- Smoke detectorBox with battery. The alarm is boxed in cardboard along with a battery and printed instructions.
- Powdered milkPack it airtight. Dry powder keeps far longer than liquid milk and needs no refrigeration, but damp air and warm storage can degrade it, so it goes into sealed bags and cans.
- Light switchPack for shipping. Blister packs or plastic trays keep switches apart, and antistatic materials protect inner parts on the way to the store.
- ShoelaceInspect and bundle. Excess material is trimmed, laces are inspected for quality, and they are paired up and packaged for retailers.
- Steel scrapSort and bale for the mill. Scrap is graded by type and packed into forms a furnace can take. It is sold to mills that melt it into new steel.
- Gelatin dessertPack powder or blocks. The blend is sold as a loose powder or as a block divided into small squares. Both are meant to dissolve fully in hot water.
