The short version
Toothpaste is a paste of fine abrasive powder, a humectant such as glycerol that keeps it from drying out, water, a foaming detergent, flavor and fluoride. A vacuum mixer blends the batch smooth, and the paste is pumped into laminated tubes that are then crimped shut at the bottom.
-
Grind the abrasive
Calcium carbonate from limestone or precipitated silica is milled into a powder so fine it feels smooth. This grit is what lifts plaque and food off teeth.
Goes in -
Prepare the gel base
Water, glycerol or sorbitol, and a thickener are mixed into a clear gel. The sugar alcohols stop the paste from drying into powder at the nozzle.
-
Fold in the powders
The abrasive, white pigment, fluoride and sweetener are added to the gel in a vacuum mixer. Pulling out the air keeps bubbles from forming, so the paste comes out dense and glossy.
Goes in -
Add foam and flavor
Last in is the detergent that makes the foam, followed by mint or another flavoring. Flavor goes in late because it evaporates easily.
-
Test each batch
Samples are tested for thickness, acidity, fluoride level and microbes before the batch is released to the filling line.
-
Fill the tubes
Empty tubes made of plastic layers, often with a thin metal foil inside, ride on a carousel under a nozzle. Each gets a measured dose and then has its open end flattened and heat-sealed.
Goes in -
Box the tubes
Sealed tubes are coded with a batch number, slid into printed cartons and packed in cases.

Worth repeating
- Egyptian tooth powder of about 5000 BC contained ashes of ox hooves, pumice, burnt eggshells and myrrh.
- Japan's Edo-period book of 1769 advertised a toothpaste sold in a box.
