How wheelbarrows are made

At one UK plant, a sensor finds the weld seam in every tube before a robot-fed machine bends it into a frame.

The short version

A steel wheelbarrow starts as two separate jobs. A hydraulic press deep-draws sheet steel into a tray, while a bender curves steel tube into a frame. Both get punched or trimmed, degreased, and coated with electrostatic paint baked on in an oven. A rubber tire goes on the wheel, and many barrows leave in a box for the buyer to bolt together.

  1. Draw the tray

A hydraulic press deep-draws sheet steel into a dished tray. Rupture and wrinkling are the faults that most often spoil a draw this deep.

  2. Trim and bead the rim

A machine trims the drawn tray's uneven edge and rolls a bead along it. An early patent from the Toledo Wheelbarrow Company did both jobs on one machine.

  3. Bend the frame tubes

At Walsall Wheelbarrow, 30 mm steel tube up to two meters long is swaged, then fed one piece at a time to a bending machine. First, a magnetic sensor finds the tube's weld seam and turns it to the best angle, because the seam changes how the tube springs back.

  4. Punch the bolt holes

Holes go in after bending, on a separate machine, and never through the seam. Legs and braces are cut from steel strip by sharp dies in big presses and punched the same way.

  5. Paint and bake

A degreasing solution cleans the steel, which then dries. Steel and paint get opposite electrical charges, so the paint pulls evenly onto every surface before an oven bakes it on.

  6. Fit the tire

A rubber tire, molded elsewhere, is placed around a wheel of steel or plastic.

  7. Check the fit

Steel parts are compared with a known-good reference part, and hole position matters most. A sample barrow may be built, loaded and pushed around as a test.

  8. Weigh out the bolts

Nobody needs to count them. A batch of the correct weight on an accurate scale holds the correct number of bolts for one kit.

  9. Box the kit

Most barrows ship unassembled in a strong cardboard box, with instructions, and take far less space that way. Some lines instead weld or bolt the tray to the frame in the factory.

Worth repeating

  • A tomb mural in Chengdu, China, dated 118 AD, shows a man pushing a wheelbarrow.
  • Walsall Wheelbarrow reported that a second automated tube-bending cell helped lift its capacity from 1800 to 3500 wheelbarrows a day.
  • A flat-pack barrow's frame can come in three parts so that the whole thing fits in the trunk of a car.
