How chopsticks are made

Disposable chopsticks are made half-split, with the two sticks still joined, so you snap the pair apart at the table.

The short version

Mass-produced chopsticks start as wood, usually aspen, milled into blocks near the forest. A factory cuts blanks from the blocks, sands them and finishes them. Each blank is sized for a whole pair and left half-split, so the two sticks stay joined until a diner pulls them apart. Fine chopsticks are shaped and lacquered by hand.

  1. Mill the wood into blocks

The best-grade wood is chosen and fed through a mill that cuts it into blocks. Aspen is a main wood for disposable pairs. This usually happens near where the trees grew, and the blocks are then shipped to the country that will use them. Bamboo, the other main material, is sawn and split into strips instead.

  2. Cut the blanks

At the chopstick factory the blocks are sawn into long thin rectangles. A disposable blank is the width of a whole pair, with a groove along the middle that leaves the halves joined.

  3. Shape the taper

Tools or a sanding belt round the sticks and taper them toward the tip. Some end square and narrow to a cylindrical point, and others are round all the way.

  4. Sand them smooth

Sanding takes off every rough spot, so the stick will not leave splinters in someone's mouth.

  5. Finish with oil or lacquer

Fine chopsticks are dipped in lacquer, which comes from the sap of a sumac tree, and hung to dry until hard and clear. Others are rubbed with oil and buffed, or dipped in nontoxic paint.

Worth repeating

  • China produces an estimated 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks a year, which takes about 25 million fully grown trees.
  • The English word comes from pidgin: the Chinese kuai-tzu, meaning quick ones, became chop-sticks.
  • Bamboo disposable chopsticks go through a different line, which splits the bamboo into strips, planes them, treats and dries them, then sharpens and polishes them.
