What it looks like on the line

  • PropaneCompress into tanks. Under modest pressure propane becomes a liquid, so it can be stored in cylinders and transported. Tanks are never filled completely, because the liquid expands as it warms.
  • PentaneSend out for foam. Sealed tankers take it to chemical plants. There it soaks into polystyrene beads as a blowing agent, a job it took over from CFCs in the 1970s. Other shipments go to refrigerant blenders and geothermal power stations.
  • StyreneShip before it sets. Treated liquid travels by tanker to plants making polystyrene, ABS and styrene-butadiene rubber. Without the inhibitor it would polymerize in storage.
  • Hot dogStuff into casings. The batter is forced through tubes into casings. Natural casings come from sheep intestines. Most hot dogs sold in the United States use a long cellulose tube instead.
  • Neon signFill with gas. A little gas goes in at low pressure, between 3 and 20 Torr. Clear tubing gives red with neon and steel blue with argon. Phosphor coatings inside the glass stretch that to many more colors.
  • RumBottle at strength. Water brings the blend to drinking strength, and it is bottled. Many countries require rum to be aged for at least one year before it can be sold as aged.
  • Caramel colorPack as a liquid. The finished color is a dark, water-soluble liquid. It goes out in drums and tanks to brewers and soft drink makers.
  • SauerkrautPack for sale. Finished kraut goes into airtight containers. Refrigeration or pasteurization is optional but lengthens its storage life.
  • BourbonFilter, dilute, bottle. After maturing, the whiskey is typically filtered, diluted with water and bottled at no less than 80 US proof, which is 40 percent alcohol.
  • Oat milkFill the cartons. The finished drink is filled into cartons or bottles and sealed.
  • Para-xyleneShip to polyester plants. Para-xylene is stored and sent to plants that turn it into terephthalic acid. That acid is the raw material for polyester and PET.
  • Root beerBottle it. The finished drink is bottled or canned under pressure so it stays fizzy.
