What it looks like on the line

  • DenimPreshrink the cloth. The woven cloth is sanforized, a mechanical treatment that shrinks it before it is cut into garments.
  • MDFPress under heat. A hot press cures the resin and squeezes the mat in stages. The two faces end up denser than the core, which gives the board its strength and a hard, smooth surface.
  • Safety pinCoil around a spindle. A custom-tooled fourslide machine, able to move in four directions, picks the wires up on a chain and winds each around a spindle. That coil becomes the spring. A 1902 patent coiled the pin and slipped on a guard in one continuous operation.
  • Saw bladeTension the body. Tensioning leaves a slight dish across the diameter and builds in a stress that resists vibration during a cut.
  • Coil springWind the helix. The wire is fed against a pin that forces it to curl as it wraps around a rotating mandrel. The spacing between turns sets how stiff the spring is.
  • CanoeRemove the spare resin. On standard hulls a hand tool clears excess resin. Lighter layups use vacuum bagging or infusion, which leaves a better ratio of resin to cloth.
  • SunglassesCut and bend to fit. A slim rotating blade cuts the mitre angle that sets how far temples open. A rotary heater then softens the temples, and pneumatic jaws press in six curvatures.
  • Orange juiceReam out the juice. Machines halve the oranges and press out the juice, or push a tube through each fruit. The fruit is squeezed gently so the bitter peel does not leak into the juice.
  • PlywoodBake in a hot press. The stack goes into a heated press that squeezes the layers together while the glue cures. The panel comes out as a single flat board.
  • BaseballPress and stamp. The ball is rolled and pressed to a round shape and stamped with its markings.
  • Linseed oilSqueeze in an expeller. A screw press crushes the seed. Without cooking the press works harder, and processors often press twice. Friction alone can warm cold-pressed oil to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Roof tilePress or extrude the profile. Simple S-shaped Spanish tiles and the Scandia tiles of Northern Europe are traditionally formed through an extruder. Interlocking tiles carry a ridge and can only be made with a tile press.
