How lip balm is made

Lip balm is melted, left to crystallize for about 48 hours, and then melted all over again before it is shaped.

The short version

Lip balm is mostly wax and oil. Beeswax, carnauba or candelilla wax gives the stick its body, and petrolatum or lanolin seals moisture into the lips. Factories weigh, melt and mix the batch, pull out air bubbles under vacuum, then let it crystallize for about 48 hours. The balm is remelted, shaped and packed into tubes or pots.

  1. Test the raw materials

Every wax and oil is checked before use, because cosmetics must meet strict safety standards. A bad lot of wax would change how hard the stick is.

  2. Melt and mix the waxes

Measured waxes and oils go into heated mixers. Carnauba has a high melting point and stiffens the stick, while petrolatum and lanolin give the slick seal. Flavor, color and sunscreen go in at this stage.

  3. Pull out the bubbles

The hot mixture is held under vacuum so trapped air rises out. Bubbles left in would show up as holes in the finished stick.

  4. Let it crystallize

The batch rests while the waxes crystallize, for about 48 hours. That long rest settles its final texture.

  5. Remelt the batch

The crystallized mass is warmed back into a liquid so it can be poured or pressed into its final shape.

  6. Shape the sticks

Liquid balm is poured into metal molds or straight into its containers and chilled until it hardens. Lipstick makers go one step further and pass the sticks through a flame for half a second to give them a glossy skin.

  7. Pack into tubes

Sticks are seated in twist-up tubes, while softer balms go into pots or squeeze tubes. Caps and labels go on last.

  • Charles Browne Fleet created ChapStick in the 1880s, and the rights were later sold in 1912 for $5.
  • In 1972, ChapStick tubes with hidden microphones were used in the Watergate scandal.
  • Egyptians made lip treatments from beeswax, olive oil and animal fat as early as 40 BC.
