How electric scooters are made
Most e-scooters have no gearbox: the motor is built into the wheel hub and turns the tire directly.

The short version
An electric kick scooter is a deck, a stem with handlebars, and two small wheels, with a brushless motor built into one wheel hub. Builders pack lithium-ion cells into a battery wired in series and parallel, fit a controller that switches current through the motor windings, mount tires on split rims, and bolt it all to the frame before testing brakes and lights.
-
Build the frame and deck
Metal tubes and plate are cut, bent and joined into the deck the rider stands on and the stem that carries the handlebars. Many models add a folding hinge at the base of the stem.
-
Build the hub motor
Copper windings go on a fixed core at the center of the hub, and a ring of permanent magnets, often neodymium, spins around them as the outer shell. That outer shell is the wheel hub itself, so no chain or gears are needed.
-
Mount the tires
Tires go onto steel or aluminum split rims. Wheels usually measure 8 to 11 inches across, and the tires are air-filled, solid, or hollow rubber.

Pack the battery cells
Lithium-ion cells are joined into groups in parallel and strings in series to reach the voltage and current the motor needs. A battery management system watches the cells and balances them while charging, so the weakest cell sets no limit on the rest.

Wire in the controller
A circuit board with a microcontroller switches current between the motor's windings in sequence to keep it turning, and manages speed and acceleration. It can also run the motor backwards as a generator for regenerative braking.
-
Fit brakes and lights
Disc or magnetic brakes go on the front, rear or both wheels, alongside the electronic braking from the motor. Lights and the throttle are wired to the controller.
-
Test the finished scooter
Each scooter is powered up to check the throttle, brakes, lights and charging before it is folded and boxed.
Worth repeating
- The first motorized stand-up scooter, the Autoped, was made in 1915.
- Depending on the model, an e-scooter's range runs from 9 to 200 km and its top speed from 14 to 160 km/h.
- A 2022 review of medical notes found e-scooter injury rates closer to motorcycles than to bicycles.
