How umbrellas are made
A collapsible umbrella is a fabric dome on a frame of ribs, and a similar one was reportedly designed in 21 AD.

The short version
A factory checks incoming ribs and fabric, cuts the cloth into strips and then triangles called gores, and prints the flat pieces. Sewing machines join 8 gores into a dome. Another team builds the shaft, ribs and runner. The canopy is then attached by sewing or gluing its points to the rib tips, the handle goes on, and each umbrella is opened and closed to test it.
-
Check ribs and fabric
Fiberglass ribs are bent to see that they do not snap, and fabric rolls over a light table to reveal knots or uneven coating. Failures go back to the mill.
Goes in -
Cut the gores
The roll is cut into rectangular strips, then into triangles called gores. Small stacks and digital templates keep every panel the same size.
-
Print the flat panels
Designs go on before sewing, by screen printing for simple logos and digital printing for complex art.
Goes in -
Sew the dome
Workers stitch 8 gores together into a canopy. A waterproof washer and tight stitching at the top center keep rain from running down the shaft.
Goes in -
Build the frame
A second team joins shaft, ribs and runner. On golf models the fiberglass ribs lock to the shaft through a high-impact plastic notch.
Goes in -
Join canopy to frame
Fabric is attached at each rib. Cheaper lines glue the tips on, while better ones sew them by machine so they cannot pop off when the glue dries.
Goes in -
Fix on the handle
A wood, rubber or plastic handle is fixed to the shaft with epoxy or screws so it will not twist loose.

Test and pack
Each umbrella is opened and closed 3 times and its loose threads are trimmed. Random samples are blasted with high-pressure water before boxing.
Worth repeating
- The first lightweight folding umbrella in Europe was introduced in 1710 by a Paris merchant named Jean Marius, and it weighed less than one kilogram.
- Umbrellas were rented out in Paris in 1769, and the rental umbrellas were made of oiled green silk.
- The oldest known umbrella appears in the archaeological record around 2310 BC, on a victory stele of Sargon of Akkad.
